Health & Safety

Gliding is an adventurous sport that has an element of managed risk. At all times club members will do their utmost to ensure your safety. A few golden rules are as follows:

Always look before you approach the airfield.

Be aware of gliders launching and landing and most importantly of location of winch cables on the ground and in the air.

Do not approach the winch at any time.

If the winch has a flashing light be aware of moving cables. A cable brake can occur at any time during a launch and result in a cable descending quickly to the ground into an unexpected area potentially carried by the wind.

Only proceed to an aircraft when invited to by a club member.

Follow all instructions given if in doubt ask and if unsure seek clarification.

Loose items must be securely stowed at all times. Cameras may be taken on the flight but must be on a wrist strap to prevent them falling into the aircraft and interfering with the controls. Cameras cannot be used during take off and landings.

At any time anyone can shout “stop” and halt a launch if they (this includes visitors) believe something is wrong. Keep shouting stop until the cable is released from the aircraft.

Anyone with any medical condition that may be a factor in this activity must declare it before agreeing to take part in gliding. Normally these are the same as those for modern rollercoaster’s however if in doubt ask the duty pilot.
