The first soaring enthusiasts came from Kaldenkirchen. They began to build an open training glider named Zögling (Pupil). They were soon joined by other enthusiasts.
The first flying activities took place in Dülkener Satgarten. Since this terrain wasn’t very suitable for gliding, E. Janssen began to look for another location in the Öbler heath. This led to the first use of Brüggen in 1930.
Several young people from Brüggen, Bracht and the surrounding area were convened for a training course in theory and practice of gliding as a preparation for military service. Some of them were to become pilots in the Air force. Later, the “Potsdamer Platz” in Bracht served as a gliding site. This site, however, was after the war used by the British to serve as an ammunition depot.
The “Luftsportverein Grenzland” was founded and based in Venlo. In 1995, 70 years after the beginning, Brüggen Aeroclub eV was founded. Since then, our flying operations take place in Elmpt.
